In a nutshell: This article describes a randomized controlled trial of DiaTel, the Active Care Management Home Telemonitoring study.  The study compared the short-term efficacy of home telemonitoring coupled with active medication management by a nurse practitioner with a monthly care coordination telephone call on glycemic control in veterans with type 2 diabetes.  A commentary is also available: Evid Based Nurs doi:10.1136/ebn1072 (online first article).

In a nutshell: This article outlines how Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust developed an innovative diabetes dietetic service to tackle the 5.3% prevalence of diabetes amongst its community. The service includes supermarket tours, a weight management programme and individual appointments. The service is an integrated care model which includes multidisciplinary teamworking across specialist and community care.

In a nutshell: Ethnic groups are at risk for poorer quality of life and increased disease complications when compared with non-ethnic counterparts living in the same country. There is little known about how culture is addressed in interventions developed for ethnic groups. The aim of this paper is to systematically review the cultural perspectives of interventions for managing diabetes and asthma in children, adolescents and/or their families from ethnic minority groups.

In a nutshell: This news story reports on the findings of the National Diabetes Audit which indicates that whilst more people are receiving all 9 key tests recommended in the NICE guidelines, thousands are still missing essential tests. The audit considered records of over 1.7 million people with diabetes in England and Wales, and found that just over half of patients with Type 2 diabetes received all nine tests in 2008/9.
