This information can then be used to help track changes in pathways and the impact on costs. It can also be used to compare costs between PCTs and to identify possible areas for savings.  The briefing is supported by an online tool that will allow organisations to monitor and evaluate the cost of diabetes care in their area and to make comparisons with others.

In a nutshell: The aim of this pilot study was to develop an intervention and test methods for a definitive randomised controlled trial (RCT) of anonymous personal online email support for patients with long term conditions who lack the expertise or the confidence to make full use of the internet.  The majority of participants had diabetes.  The researchers concluded that an RCT is feasible and necessary to evaluate the potential benefits of anonymous email support.

In a nutshell: Aimed at those working in national and local public health services, the recommendations aim to help prevent type 2 diabetes among high risk populations and communities. Risk factors include being overweight or obese and whether or not someone is physically active. There are 11 recommendations delivering guidance on: integrating national diabetes strategy with cardiovascular disease and cancer strategies, promoting healthy diet and physical activity, local needs assessments and training for health professionals.
