In a nutshell: People with diabetes account for 15 per cent of inpatients in England, according to ‘National Diabetes Inpatient Audit (NaDIA) 2010 (England)’ which also found that they had been in hospital for an average of eight days, approximately three days longer than all inpatients.

DAWN: Diabetes Appointments via Webcam in Newham

In a nutshell: The Newham Shine 2011 project involves replacing routine follow-up outpatient appointments that don’t require physical examination with web-based consultations. These consultations will be offered for all patients attending the transitional and young adult service, and for all patients under a consultant in the general diabetes clinic.
It is anticipated that the project will result in a reduction in the cost per outpatient contact as the rate of non-attendance reduces; overhead costs will be reduced; and it is expected that there will be a reduction in emergency attendance over time.
